On Wednesday, the Montana governor signed a bill into law banning the social media video-sharing app TikTok, with claims of privacy concerns. Whether or not this law will be enforceable has yet to be seen, as it is not possible for Apple and Google to prohibit their app stores from offering TikTok in a single state.

Still, there is some cause for concern, as Montana is paving the way for a potential nationwide ban of the app.

TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps in the country and is particularly useful for small businesses to promote themselves. By posting short videos of their products every day, small businesses have been able to market their products and grow their business without having to invest a lot of money. Social media in general is a popular form of marketing for small businesses, and TikTok is especially popular, with over 150 million users in the United States alone.

With the future of TikTok in limbo, small businesses who primarily market on the app should look toward the future and consider other forms of digital and traditional marketing. While the app is a helpful tool, it is important not to place all of your eggs in one basket.
